Kinda hard for me to "experiment" being in eastern NC we are flat as Marcy Darceys chest & the last time I pulled an rv over any mountains was 8 years ago.

I understand that completely; I live in Florida. When I get to the mountains it takes me a few miles to get into the swing of things.

<40 mph is a hazard and does require hazard light use. To the OP if you are that uncertain about towing in mountains and using Black Mountain as an example, then for the love of all things holy do not, and I repeat do not go to Colorado. You will have a coronary. I would suggest Kansas or Nebraska.

6% is nuttin'. Leave in T/H mode and manually downshift if you feel you need to. Personally, if the engine's not holding speed, I'll let the speed run up to about 5 over my "target" speed, then stab the brakes medium-hard, slow down to about 5 under my "target", then let it ride. OP - to eliminate the chaff from the wheat..:R.., post your question to one of the brand specific forums, several available for any brand - whether gas or diesel.

The Ford or Dodge folks *won't* be on a Chevy/GM forum and vice-versa.

You get mostly solid answers for your make, engine & trans combos, etc. - as above.

Even if it's not a requirement, it's just smart. You've got traffic on a 2 or 3 lane road and part of that traffic is going 30-50 mph SLOWER than the other traffic, it's SMART to call attention to yourself to be sure the other people see you.

Leave it in tow/haul, auto mode. The truck should downshift to maintain the correct speed. You may have to brake once in a while, but I doubt that it will be much.

That's all there is to it as far as I'm concerned and I have towed over many of the major passes in Colorado, NM, and Wyoming.

I do NOT use cruise control. The tow/haul holds the transmission in the lower gear as I brake once in a while. Never, ever, had a problem with the "red line"--RPM.

It is a great system if you let it "do its thing."
