Gosh Chuck, that's a really big unit. I have a one ton 7.3 a year newer than yours, and I pull 9300 lbs max weight.
I think you had better crunch some numbers and really see what that rig weighs and what your truck is capable of towing and pin weight. Most of the research I see says around 12,000 pounds is about it.
I will say that hauling my 9000 pounds up steep hills in first gear isn't much fun, and first gear was my only choice coming down too. This is up and down a well used highway here in B.C.
