New Toy Hauler-Extended Warranty from Portfolio Protection?

Next week we are picking up a new 2014 300X12 XLR.

The dealer is suggesting a warranty (I know - upsale...). Has anyone heard of Portfolio Protection?

Are they worth the money?

  • I think they are also known as First Extended.

    Any one have them?

  • We found the Good Sam extended warranty to be the best value of those we considered.
  • I'm leery of extended warranties, and I know that they are a huge profit margin for dealers. So a couple things if your set on getting one. Talk to the dealer service people about the company, they their response time is, approval, etc. If they don't like it they may tell you. Then negotiate on the price, hard. They're making money on the RV, they can give a lot on the warranty if they want.

Then shop around; do check out the Good Sam extended warranty, but call others. The plus to the one the dealer sells is they will usually do the work and then wait for the payment, but they won't for outside warranties - in that case you have to pay up front and then you have to wait. If the dealer won't wait on their own warranty then I'd run away.

Final thought, if you will honestly put the money away for warranty coverage and keep it, sort of self insuring, chances are you'll be money ahead in the long run.
  • Extended warranties are the "Flim Flam", "Snake Oil Salesman", Carnival Barker and "Old tyme Used car salesmen" scammers your Mommy and Daddy used to warn you about!

    1) Put the money you were going to waste on such a poor investment in the bank.

    2) From the Consumers Affairs Website...Industry sources put the profit margin on consumer electronics extended warranties at between 40 percent and 80 percent.

    3) It's particularly infuriating to consumers when they purchase an extended warranty, only to be told it doesn't cover their repair when they try to use it!

    4) Hundreds of thousands of American motorists found they were holding worthless extended warranty policies following the bankruptcy a National Warranty Insurance Co. Offering extended warranties through 5,000 car dealers nationwide, the company had about a million active contracts when it went under.

5)The Federal Trade Commission says consumers, before signing any extended coverage contract, should fully understand its terms and coverage. The agency also stresses that what consumers are actually buying is not an extended warranty but a "service contract."

I know that Consumer Reports has said for many years not to bother with extended warrnties..BUT also a Harvard University Study says the services included in Exrended Warranties aren't as valuable as they are made out to be.

In fact most warranties expire unused...either way, if you do choose to buy an extended warranty understand that chances are good that you're simply paying for peace-of-mind and probably not much else.

All of which implies that you can certainly buy extended warranties if you wish..or just eliminate the middle man and flush the money directly down the toilet!

  • SooperDaddy - You made me laugh!

I had already talked myself out of it. I am not a huge fan of extended warranties. My wife (the voice of reason) reminded me that I never get them, why now?

Thanks to everyone for all the input!

  • I looked up Protfolio Protection on BBB site:
    See http://www.bbb.org/sdoc/business-reviews/auto-parts-and-supplies-new/portfolio-in-irvine-ca-13196201/Complaints#breakdown

They show a total of 6 complaints that all appear resolved and have an A+ rating.

For a $44K new RV, I have a quote from them for a 7 year "exclusionary coverage" plan, $100 deductable, for about $1700. A similar plan from Good Sam is quoted as 6 years, $100 deductable, for $4200!

Something can't be right here. I think I'll call some service centers and see what their experience has been with these contracts.
