Newbie question, should have asked this first.

I jumped into technical questions on my first post in this forum, but in retrospect, I think I should have polled y'all on basic manufacturer and model questions.

My current trailer is Forest River Flagstaff. Been very pleased with it, has been trouble-free. In full disclosure, it was my first camper, so not a lot of perspective otherwise.

It's a hybrid with two fold down end bunks and a fold out sofa. Mom takes the front bunk, I take the back bunk (6'5", so beds are too small for two peeps), and 9 yo kid takes the fold out sofa.

Assuming mom and I would share the king size bed in a FW, kid would be best served with her own "room". We like the rear sitting areas due to the amount of windows you get there, so a mid bunk seems to be the logical choice to accomplishing both. Once in a while a friend of hers will join us and the loft bunk found above seems to be a good place for her friend to sleep.

An outside kitchen is not a must-have, but we like the idea, especially since they don't seem to steal a lot of interior or storage space when they are tucked under an inside entertainment center.

We mostly do seasonal camping at a resort near the Chesapeake (near our marina). We do short destination trips in the spring and fall (just did a 5 day trip to southern VA to hit colonial and revolutionary war sites).

I have an 04 GMC 3500 Sierra Duramax/Allison DRW TV.

To date I visited the same dealer we bought our current trailer from, which is about 2.5hrs away, since they have the most models on site to check out. They are a Jayco and Forest River dealer mostly. We live in SE PA, they are central PA.

Saw Coachmen Chaparral and Sierra mid bunk models in our price range that looked pretty good to us.

Our budget is in the 50-60k range.

I like the full height models since I am 6'5".

Ok, now that you know everything about me, what brands and models would you recommend?

Todd

That thing is a MONSTER. GVW of about 15,000 lbs !!! :E

First TT of any kind that had a king size bed.
  • I agree with Mr SabreCanuk. Check out the 377MB floor plan. It wasn't available when we purchased our Columbus, but if I had to get another fiver, that would be the one.
BTW, my RV King bed is 72"x80", or 6'7" long.
  • I am a real fan of bunkhouses ! Plus side is, if your kid wants to bring a friend, there is plenty of space. Down side is, adult guests would have to share the bedroom with your kid.

Never looked for a 5er with a king bed. Most have queen.
  • When dealing with a local dealer you just have to have your ducks in a row. Know the price at bigger dealers and be willing to walk away and know your bottom line price. Remember tho, you will probably need service at some point and many dealers WILL NOT service a rig they do not sell so you may be driving many miles for warranty service. Our last rig was priced about 2K higher than a dealer 2 thousand miles away but it was the best we could get and still expect service. WE were still 12K under MSRP.

AS far as trailers, take a look at Open Range Roamer or 3X. They both have pretty cool layouts and dealers in PA

  • Ok, an even more basic question:

Pricing varies widely on the same models from dealer to dealer, with the high volume dealers being literally 10s of thousands of dollars cheaper for the same rig vs smaller dealers. Unless you're fortunate enough to live close to a high volume dealer, how do you get your small local one to be price competitive so you can have a one stop shopping and warranty experience with them?

And then it seems that some models are just plain not available in geographic regions. Grand Designs and KZ are scarcer than hen fingers around these parts. Do people buy sight unseen and then pay to have them trucked in?

My hybrid trailer experience was a much less risky proposition when it comes to the complexity and cost of a FW. I didn't buy local to save a few thou, and when I thought I actually had a warranty issue, the local Forest River dealer was less than accommodating and scheduled me months out. Luckily the problem fixed itself. I can't imagine a FW purchase like that would be any different.
  • For better brands, look for an Arctic Fox dealer. There used to be a dealer in PGH area. If your happy with your FR brand, look at Cedar Creek or Cardinal. Both higher end FR products. Check online sellers and Ebay for deals on models you might be interested in
  • Todd,

If you are already traveling 2 1/2 hours to central PA, may I suggest you travel north to Souderton and visit Fretz RV. I think you might like their stock, plus they are probably a bit closer. They also have a great service center.
  • My advice is use google. Search for "mid bunk fifth" came up with quite a few diff options
My favourite would be due to current signature :)
    Palomino Columbus 377mbc
    Grand design 377 mbc

Fwiw I'm also 6'4" and feel your pain. The Columbus has a huge EVERYTHING and that's why we went with ours. Including outdoor kitch.

If you don't HAVE to have a 2017/18 model then there are tons in your price range.
  • Hi Todd, Well as you have found out, layouts are important to what you need. As too weight what you can safely pull. We personally prefer the Keystone's Montana because fits our needs, so you might want to check them out as well. (Keystone), like other mfg's have a variety of models. Good Luck and Happy Camping !!
  • My advice is to attend a RV show near you so you can look at many different brands and models at one location.

Good luck and enjoy the "hunt"!
