No Propane Flow to RV Appliances

I have a problem with the propane on my 5th wheel (2019 Montana High Country )

I just bought the unit second hand and have never used the propane system before. When I turn my bottles on, then go inside and try to light the stove, I get a short (1 second) hiss, and then no further pressure. If I let the system rest for half an hour and turn it on again, I get another 1 second hiss, then no more pressure. It appears that there is only a tiny bit of gas coming from the cylinder.

Things I've tried:

1) The cylinders do have propane in them, I estimate about half full. When I unscrew the green pigtail fitting, I get a hiss and a little burst of propane. Also the regulator I have shows red when there is no propane, and green to indicate sufficient pressure, and it's green when switched to either of the two tanks.

2) I've tried turning off the gas, unscrewing the pigtails, letting the system rest for 15 min, and then assembling again, turning on the tank VERY slowly, but no difference in the outcome. Very minimal hiss from stove for 1 sec, then no pressure.

3) I checked and tested the propane leak detector, it displays the green light indicating it is working properly. I don't see a solenoid anywhere that this leak detector would be operating, but I did check it just in case.

Do you have any ideas of what I should try next? The RV is only 6 months old, so I can't imagine the regulator would be bad. I bought it from previous owners who had free electricity at their RV park, so the previous owners never used any part of the propane system.

Thank you!

Randy

  • Do any of the other propane powered devices (water heater, refer, furnace) work? No, you have a supply problem.

Yes other devices work, but not the ones in the slide out, check for crimping of the flex gas line under the slide. A not uncommon problem on some Montanas.

How did you estimate? Propane tank gauges are seldom accurate. Did you weigh each tank? the side of the tank will tell you what the tank should weigh when full and/or empty. Personally, I would take the tanks and have them bleed out all the propane currently in the tank and then have them both refilled. I would also use a little piece of wire and run through all the propane tubes in your stove, then take a air hose and blow them out. Are the tanks beyond the certification date, if so buy 2 new tanks and have them filled. If this dosen't solve the problem, I would replace the propane the propane regulator.

  • OPD equipped bottles have a surge leak flow detector in their valves. When opening the valves on of he bottles , do it very slowly the first 1/2 turn then open all the way.
  • The chemical Mercaptan is added to natural gas, and propane, and when changing tanks, and fittings, the scent gets on things and smells for long time.
I recently thought I had a gas leak at home, but the gas company had a major repair down the road, and put too much Mercaptan back in the line, and it took a few weeks to go away in the house.
  • Always turn the valves on slowly. Or it shuts down as you are saying. Just something to try.
  • Thank you so much guys! DutchmenSport, your post about just purging/filling the tanks is comforting. I will try that first. It's possible the tanks are lower than I think. If that doesn't work, I will try replacing the regulator as per the other gentlemen.

Thank you again everyone! I'll keep you posted on what works.

  • Your propane tank may have some pressure in it, and may appear to be half full, but it doesn't have enough pressure in it. I had a similar problem with both my propane tanks on my Montana High Country, bought new last September. It wasn't until I took them to be refilled, even though I didn't think they needed filled, that everything started working right. I took the propane tank to be filled at a different dealership than were bought, and they purged the tank and then refilled it. Both worked fine and the flow was fine after that.

    Edit:
Except then I had a slight gas smell for several months and could never figure it out. After about the 7th or 8th fillup for each tank, it quit smelling. Best I can figure, the connections had small imperfections in them that allowed some seepage. After connecting and disconnecting many, many time, it must have worn down and sealed correct. That's the only thing I can think of that would have caused the smell. Perhaps the slight leakage caused the tank to have less pressure as it leaded the pressure off? I don't know. All I know is, after they purged the tank, I had flames!
  • Sure sounds like a bad regulator to me. Amazon has them pretty cheap
  • The only thing left is a faulty regulator. Either have it checked by a qualified gas fitter or just replace it.
