- TripalotExplorerWe were in Iceland last Sept. but did not see the Northern Lights on our trip.
We have seen them several times from our home or on our travels in Ontario Canada.
Iceland is a great place to visit - very expensive though.
Two hamburgers, fries and two 7 oz. cokes in a run of the mill restaurant cost us $50.
Swimming in the Blue Lagoon is one of the major tourist attractions. It is the world's most expensive swimming pool @ $50 person not including towel rental.
Glad we went but probably a been there/done that trip.
Go for it! - dbob62180ExplorerIceland! One of the best trips we have ever taken. We went in July so no northern lights but spectacular none the less! The first week we stayed in Reykjavik on our own and explored the city and surrounding areas. The second week, we took a guided tour in a small van (just 8 other couples) with a native Icelander as our guide. We took the Ring Road tour around the country. We learned so much history, heard lots of folklore, saw glaciers, Rhyolite Mountains, National Parks, black sand beaches, and so much more!
The cost was about what we have paid on other European jaunts, not that expensive, unless you want to stay at top of the line hotels and eat only 'American' food! We stayed in nice enough hotels - ate at lots of interesting, local cafes; out of the city the gas stations have some great cafes! Some airlines will let you stop and stay in Iceland for a few days if you are flying to Europe at no extra airfare.
If you do it, get out beyond Reykjavik and the infamous Golden Circle tour. It is a beautiful country! We would go back in a heartbeat! - SabreCanuckExplorer

We have pretty awesome Northern Lights in MANITOBA but it will depend on the day and weather.. Probably cheaper than Iceland too.
Living in California is on my wife's bucket list...
You want to trade for a few months? :) - tonymullExplorerhttp://www.chenahotsprings.com/
Cheaper alternative by far! Not that I would not enjoy Iceland. - dapperdanExplorerTraveling to Alaska would definitely be the more "affordable" way to see the Northern Lights. It's still a bit "pricey" but worth it in my opinion.
Here's a couple of pictures from last March, I was up in Fairbanks for a week, we went to Chena Hot Springs for 3 nights while there. One is from Chena and the other I shot just outside of Fairbanks. We saw the Aurora every night we were there.
Dan - wilber1ExplorerIceland like the rest of Scandinavia is expensive but it is also unique and well worth the effort. Try the Hakarl. We were only there for four days but would love to go back. You don't go there for the summer weather either. Kind of like Newfoundland in that respect.
