I feel bad for you. I assume the mailbox will get relocated ;)
As for backing up I find I need to pull forward much further to get the trailer turning in a smooth arch. Even draw a line with chalk where the trailer wheels should be in the curve. Best of luck next time. It does get easier. Five tries at it should not get you discouraged. Sometimes I need to get out and look a few times to stay on track.
