One 30 lb and one 20 lb propane tank for versatility?

Both my 30# LP tanks are expired and need to be recerted. I was thinking about swapping out a 30 for a 20 that way I have the option of using an exchange tank if I was in an area or time where a refill was hard to locate. Has anybody else done this? I threw a 4x4 under a 20# and it looks like it would be stable enough with the clamp on top. It seems the 10# loss in capacity (60 vs 50) might be a worthwhile tradeoff for the option of using an exchange in a pinch. Thoughts?
  • Sounds lioke a bad idea to me. If you had the additional 10 pound capacity of 30 vs. 20 you would not run out and need to exchange the tank
  • We run two 40# main tanks, but I carry a 20# on the back of the truck for the portable grill plus as a back up in case we run dry. Although, I'm seriously thinking about carrying another pair of 40# tanks on the truck as well just because weight isn't an issue for us. If I were you, I'd keep the two 30's just for capacity. Good luck.
  • I will never go the exchange route. These are my tanks and I know how they've been treated, etc. Also, it's way more expensive to go the exchange route.

I also agree with the other poster. When you run one of them dry, just switch over to #2 tank and get #1 refilled at your leisure. That's why these rigs have nice big tanks. I have never even come close to running out of propane.
  • GO have both re-certified and refilled.

Visual Certifications are good for another 5 yrs.

Then you still have two 30# cylinders.

Besides how tough is it to get one refilled when it goes empty BEFORE the other is completely used up.

7 yrs of FT travel never had an issue or ran out of propane

If you can find an 'exchange' place you can find a place to refill YOURS just as easy.
How do you run out of propane with two 30#s :H
