Years ago I had a 98 chevy 1500 4x4 that I towed a 4000 lbs 24' 5th wheel with. The truck towed it great. Had to help out a freind once who was having problems with his truck. Towed his 30 foot sandpiper bunkhouse home for him. It was a 30 mile trip doing 45mph. I would never do that again. It was not safe at all. The suspension compression was really not to bad but the handling was horrible at anything over 45mph.
I sure hope your co-worker will upgrade trucks before he goes camping.
