Opinions Wanted

After getting set up this weekend, noticed a bulge on the tread of one of my tires. Belts separating.

Tires are two years old, they are ST 235/80-16 E. My axles are 6000LB and wheels are 16x6.

Last time I weighed my fifth-wheel, it weighed about 13000. Pin weight was 3000 so I have approximately 10,000 pounds on my axles.

I have narrowed down my choices to two tires. First choice is the Bridgestone Duravis R250 LT 235/85-16.

Second choice is the Maxxis ST 235/80-16.

The Bridgestone tire are quite a bit more expensive but I think they will be a much better tire even though they have a lower weight rating.

Any suggestions?

Thanks I believe i will go with the R250's

    Good choice!
  • I changed all 4 Goodyear marartron tires on my 2011 Jayco Eagle, I went with maxis 16" . I think they are called 880 or something to do with 88888888.
  • I had a friend loose a BFG Commercial TA tire this winter in Arizona. It is not the first I have heard of failing that was outside the volunteer recall S/N range.

If one is going to use LT tires on a 5th wheel that is pushing the limits of 6K axles then spend the money and get the Ribs or R250s. If you are at around 10K on the axles, the Transforce seems to get really good reviews.

I ran a set of RIBs 6.5 years and 40K+ miles and sold them on CL with 65 percent tread left for 200 bucks. Three had date codes 7.5 years old and one 8.5 years old, and was getting micro cracks on the sidewalls.

    I installed R250's this time.

Just say NO to cheap ST tires if you want to put tire issues behind you.

  • The two tires are apples vs oranges.

The R250 is a all steel carcass commercial grade LT tire that has a excellent reputation when used on 6k axles.

The Maxxis ST may be popular with some folks but a quick search come up with about a dozen Maxxis ST tire complaints just on this website. A google has even more complaints from a broad range of trailer types (not just RVs).

Cost ?? Sure the XPS and R250 are expensive as they are a commercial grade tire that weighs close to 56-58 lbs vs 35-37 lb for a ST tire.

Other excellent LT tire for 6k axles are of course the BFG Commercial HT as mentioned and the Firestone Transforce HT/Goodyear Wrangler HT/Uniroyal Laredo HD-H/cooper SRM II. These tires are a fabric carcass and a proven tire when used in a trailer position and 6k axles and smaller.

The LT tire is a bit taller/wider so do your measuring for proper clearance or let the tire dealer do it for you.
  • Are your tires oem. Is the two yr from dot date. how fast do you drive. does one tire bear more weight than the others.??? did you go over curb or have side loads when backing....lots of questions to be answered before deciding on tire...
  • Maxxis ST 15" LRE's lasted ~26 months on my 10K trailer (sidewall separation multiple tires...same time). Not sure if their 16" ST's are any better.

I'm running on 16" TA's now. We'll know more in the next year.
  • I just put Bridgestone R250 Duravis LT 235/85 R16's on a 13,950 GVWR 5th wheel with a pin weight of over 2500 lbs with 6,000 lb axles. I narrowed my choices down to Firestone Transforce HT's, Bridgestone R250 Duravis and Michelin Ribs. At the time I had to make a decision the Bridgestone tires were on sale and not much more than $100 more than the Firestones. I paid $919 total including tax for 4 tires including moiunting, balance new stems, etc. The Michelin Ribs would have been another $400. My view is the Bridgestones were worth the $100 extra over the Firestone HT's and close to the reputation of the Michelin Ribs with a $400 savings. Only have about 2,000 miles on the new Bridgstones so far but they sure are a better looking and much heavier than the ST tires that were on the 5th wheel originally. I went through two sets of ST tires in 6 1/2 years each set having less than 10,000 miles on them. Tread seperation issues. Will never own another ST tire on a 5th wheel.
  • BF Goodrich Commercial TA is also a great option. Cheaper than the firestones and far better than any of the ST tires and their 65 MPH speed rating.
  • The Maxxis tires have great reviews and are very popular in this community.
