I had mine installed by a dealer, that being said they installed it exactly over my rear axle.
I would get the tech install information from whoever makes your hitch. Also, since you have a short bed (or standard bed) you may want to stay away from mounting a hitch forward of your axle as some have suggested. If you do that make sure you buy a sliding hitch because you will be using the sliding feature all the time while trying to park your rig.
