I use a swing out step like this Clicky It works great when I need it and is out of the way when I don't.
I put one like AZ linked on each side of the truck. I wish they were a little bit closer to the rear wheel, but then I have short legs. LOL
I usually will swing the step out and put one foot on the step and one on the rear tire. Good luck, John - fj12ryderExplorer IIIThe way the B&W hitch works, I can just reach the pin and arm standing in the outboard wheel of the dually. A little more height would be nice, but this works.
- AllworthExplorer III have a little white plastic stool about 8" high, probably intended to let small children step up to brush their teeth. It is sturdy enough for my 200# and light enough to throw into the basement after I hook up the breakaway cable and lock the hitch tab. I can reach from the ground, but just a little height helps a lot and keeps my belt buckle from scratching the fender of the truck.
I think we found the stool at Big Lots! (After an even lighter one blew out of the bed of the truck at speed.) - rhagfoExplorer IIIWheel to Wheel running boards, board, tire in, but all of hook up and disconnect is simply reaching in from the side, never thought 6' was all that tall!
- bpoundsNomadMade my own. One of a kind, can't be purchased. Well, two of a kind actually, since I put one on each side.
- ependydadExplorerI picked up an over-the-wheel tire step from Tractor Supply. Works well when I'm not too lazy to put it on. Usually I just step on the top side of the tire and pull myself up with the bed rails.
- mwoolExplorerUse a 2 step ladder to get to hitch and lock but DW really wants a 3 step.
- webslaveExplorerI use AMP Research Bedstep for the tailgate area and I have a Bedstep2 on each side of the box:

With the new trucks being higher and my physical limitations (Rheumatoid and Osteo Arthritis), I found it difficult to get into the bed, on the bumper or even onto the wheel. These steps split the distances and allow me and even my 5' 0" DW to climb into the truck's bed for any number of reasons, whether the 5er is hooked up or not. They aren't cheap, but, they are solidly built, always there and have never caused me a minutes worth of trouble. Very easy to install, all the hardware comes with them and they are bolt on with no alterations to the truck necessary. They fold back up under the truck, so, there isn't anything to store, misplace or lose; always there and always handy. - Campfire_TimeExplorerNot that I have a 5ver, but I have been looking at this for similar reasons. Also to work under the hood. Might this be useful for you? Or would that be too far from the front of the bed?

I also carry a small step ladder for cleaning off the top of my slide.
