Went to pickup our new truck last night. The cargo rating according to Chevrolet’s website is almost #3100. I looked at the sticker on the door jamb and it said not to exceed #2750. I just lost another #350. So I pissed off the salesman and backed out of the deal. We are now looking for a one ton. All the salesman kept saying was you’ll be fine. I new all he wanted to do was sell a truck. Now I’m at square one again. I have a new fifth wheel at the dealer and no way to get it home. lol
GOOD choice! I think you'll be a lot happier. IMO, you'd be fine with a SRW 1t at those weights, but if you want to go bigger in the future, you'll be limited. Not saying you should get a dually, but think about what you might want to to in 5 years. Personally, even though we went bigger (18" taller, 3' longer and 2 more slides) we actually went =down= in the FW's GVW by 820 lbs. :-)
Also, don't let the "screaming engine" guys deter you from a gasser. Gas engines produce their highest h.p. at high RPM, and are designed for it. I'd get 4.10 gears, for sure. You do lose the engine braking that a diesel gives you. Just be aware that, in the mountains, you're going to need to be =real= patient going up hills and =real= careful going down. On uphills, trying to run in a higher gear is likely to kill your mileage even more =and= can cause overheating; I speak from experience on both counts. Running at higher RPM allows the engine to run more "free" and it will actually not work as hard, illogical as that sounds. My dad's a firm believer that cruise controls should have the option to set an RPM instead of speed. :B
