Pole and Holders

Hi all,

I'm looking real hard at the 22' pole and hatch holder from Poles and Holders

https://www.polesandholders.com/

Mount

I read about how the poles flex....and I began to wonder if the pole would hit the camper in stronger winds? How high up did you mount the holder to avoid this?

Sorry, I know there have been 1000 treads on this type of thing but search failed me.

Thanks everyone!

  • During HEAVY winds mine sometimes may tap the trailer, i used a piece of foam pool noodle about 6 inches long and now no problems.
  • I use electrical conduit and sleeve one inside the other and drill it an pin it.

One thing to consider about mounting it permanently on one spot on your camper, if you park under trees, or in a wooded area, you're pretty much restricted. If you find a way to keep it mobile and consider different options about mounting it permanent, or using a non-permanent mount, if you park anywhere with a "low overhead" you can put the pole in a different location. (just something to think about).... good luck! happy camping!
  • Poles and Holders merchandise is top notch and very durable, my two poles have been thru brutal testing. As far as touching your hauler in strong winds, it happens but doesn't seem to hurt anything. Our holder is attached to the steel frame around the ramp, I suggest that area as opposed to the ladder.
  • Thanks everyone, sounds like even mounted low it shouldn't hit the trailer. I looked at the Flag Pole Buddy, however it mounts on the ladder. As my ladder is removable, I felt that would be too many wiggling parts.

I'll order the thing and try it a about 6' off the ground level...hoping to get it where I can install the flag without climbing :)

    Again, good info.....

  • Here's a photo of my previous camper. I use a 20 foot collapsable cane fishing pole. I don't fly any flags, but I do fly a wind sock and a fish! I just bought a Minion wind sock yesterday that I'll be adding to my variety.

I used about a 2 and 1/2 foot of simple PVC pipe as the sleeve to put the "pole" in. I simply bungie corded it to the spare tire holder, or to my trailer tongue jack.

The cane fishing pole has a lot of flex in it, it's never hit or touched the trailer, in some 15 years of doing this.

By the way, I really like my cane fishing poles for this. I have 2 of them. I used one for fishing only once. They made a better wind-sock pole than a fishing pole!

  • I think a 16' pole would be adequate since you are mounting the holder on the trailer.
  • When I first put the pole holder on I put the pole on my ladder that I take off and on located on the side. I did have one time where it did tear off my gutter extender off, since then I have modified the pole holder mount so it is mounted permanently affixed to the rear of TH between the door and the side of the trailer, this way it does not come in contact with the gutter extender I sandwich some angle between the tabs on the holder, and drilled and tapped the holes 1/4-20 bolts into the steel frame of the TH. I think the angle is approx.one inch wide by 5/16 inch thickness and have not had a problem since and it has been in some pretty strong wind gusts
  • Check out these guys.

    Flag Pole Buddy

I have one for over 5 years now and no problems. They even have lights to replace the plastic ball at the top of the pole. I usually run 2 3x5 flags on the pole with no problems.
  • I believe I ordered the 16' pole from them. It's mounded to the side ladder on my toy haulers within reach from the ground. Hasn't been an issue so far.
