If I understand what you are saying:
120 from Hot to Ground
120 From Neutral to Ground
0 from Hot to Neutral
You are then wired wring.
Should be:
120 from Hot to Ground
0 From Neutral to Ground
120 from Hot to Neutral

X2 ... I'd double check the wiring of the new pigtail. Pay special attention to the neutral. It shouldn't be hot.
