We have never used one in the 25 years of RV ownership. Our RV isn't packed with expensive electronics and we use the air about once every two years. Besides that, we stay at the same 12~15 different places and have never had any problem at any of them.
So at this point we don't have the need for it but if we got a much more expensive RV and traveled to new places more, I would probably get one with an autoformer built in.
That sums it up. How many RV's go to the same places regularly vs. those who like to explore and constantly find new places.
If you explore new CG's a surge protector becomes more important If you repeat the same places you know what to expect.
Sure you can have a problem at a familiar place, but if the place is familiar you know what to expect.
I think a surge is cheap insurance however it is not absolutely necessary.
