Pullrite Superglide Hitch Problem?

So I invested in a brand new Pullrite Superglide hitch to go with my new Cougar 327RWS Fifth Wheel...installed at Camping World.

I am having a lot of trouble getting it to lock on when hooking up. U hooking is easy. Here is what I have tried thus far...

Made sure I am exactly straight when hitching up....

Lower the Fifth to ride up the hitch...

When I get it to finally lock it first makes a quiet thump which several folks have thought I was locked in...but I wasn't. It takes a second loud thump to fully lock in. Problem is half the time it won't lock in at all and I have to pull up and try again. Thoughts ?

  • Make sure you are lined up exactly in line with the hitch. Make the inbox ride up on the hitch plate. BACK IN RATHER HARD AND SOMEWHAT FAST. DON'T BE TOO GENTLE. Be aggressive when backing in. It needs to hit hard.

The biggest Noobie mistake is being too timid when backing in.
  • Mine will do this if I do not have the capture plate low enough to ride up on the hitch. I make sure the plate rides up on the hitch
  • X2 Let trailer ride up on hitch, been doing this for many years. It is possible to high hitch and unhitch. Ron Day
  • I used a Superglide for about 11 years without any problems. Contrary to others experiences I always had to make sure to have a fair amount of weight on the hitch as I backed underneath it. Never had an issue hooking up in all those years if I let the trailer ride up the hitch.
  • I had a similar problem when I first got my Superglide. The manual has a diagram (page 10) that shows capture plate in relation to hitch ramp when hooking up. I made a copy and keep in my truck console.
  • Just confirming that your not using a plastic wear plate on your pin box.

There not to be used with a Superglide hitch.

  • Does your Cougar have a pinbox with an airbag, like a 5th Airborne or Trail Air?

I have some trouble with my Pullrite Super 5th because the air bag lets the plate "roll" when hooking up, and the tolerance for the pin is so tight on a Pullrite, that it doesn't latch.

I have found that if you hook up with the pin higher than normal (not riding up the plate) it works better.
  • The only thing I can think of is the capture plate may be set to for forward. To check hook the camper and truck up and check the capture plate it should NOT be touching the hitch throat, close but not touching.

  • I set the 5'ers height to almost equal to the hitch when holding the hitch plate level. Maybe 1/8" to 1/4" at most below. I found if it has to ride up the hitch too much I had trouble getting it to lock. With a superglide you really don't have to worry much about high hitching. The capture plate on the 5'er won't allow you to hitch that high.

There is 2 separate clicks. First click the release arm pulls in most of the way but not fully locked. Nudge the tow vehicle back just a bit more and you'll hear another click and the arm pulls all the way in to the locked position.

My guess is that you are setting the 5'ers height too low and forcing too much weight on the hitch before its locked. If I'm slightly off from being perfectly aligned with the tow vehicle I do pivot the hitch just enough but thats only 1 or 2 degrees at most.

Unhitching I lower the stands, pull the release and raise the 5'er until I can see a 1/8" gap between the capture plate and the hitch plate. Then pull the tow vehicle forward and it releases with ease.
