PullRite, Why do I need a Capture Plate?

I apologize because this may be a obvious question/answer. The information on the PullRite site did not give me a satisfactory answer. But I don't quite understand the need for the capture plate? Can someone who has one please explain?
  • . . .Yer gonna be real happy with that set up; VERY EASY to use!!!!!
  • A Pull Rite Super Glide hitch doesn't pivot on the kingpin. The kingpin only locks the trailer to the hitch. The capture plate has a wedge located just behind the kingpin. When you turn the wedge portion forces the entire hitch head to pivot and in doing so it also slides back for extra clearance. Without a capture plate the hitch will not work.
