Question about a 5th wheel and a couple of greenhorns

Hi all, DH and I have narrowed down our search for a 5th wheel to the Cedar Creek 36CKTS.

We've had a Class C before but we're both retiring at the end of the year and plan to spend the summers in Colorado so are looking for something that is more livable.

We'd just gotten serious about looking when we found a 2012 in the exact model, fit and finish that we're looking for. It has a number of extra features on it that we want and it's priced right from all the research we've done.

The very odd part is that it happens to be in north TX and we live in NV. But we'll be in TX this weekend for a family reunion and the trailer is about 5 miles from where I grew up so it's easy to go take a look.

Ok, sorry for the long wind up but here is the crux of the question. We're greenhorns and the trailer is owned by an individual. He'll have it hooked up so we can test the ac, stove etc. But beyond the stuff that we know how to turn the knobs on for we don't have a clue how to check the leveling system, to know if there has been water damage, etc. (I found the checklist for how to buy a used 5th wheel but we don't know what half the stuff on it is and we sure can't take it for a spin on the road since we don't have a truck yet).

I know advice is worth what's paid for it, but if this were you and your first purchase what would you advise? From the pictures it is super clean, the stove has never been used... it's spotless... BUT it's a lot of money and we think we've found the floorplan that we can live with for a long time so how would you recommend we proceed?

  • I am guessing it is near Gsinsville based on your description. Google RV repair Gainsville tx and also RV dealer Gainsville tx. Then call one or more and see if they provide that kind of service and the costs.
  • I forgot. If the trailer tires are more than 3 years old, plan on replacing them. They have date codes on them. With trailer tires, it isn't how they look that is important, it is age and you will have no idea how they were maintained (pressure, etc). Also brakes inspected and wheels bearings removed, iinspect and replaced or repacked. Peace of mind goes a long way on tires and wheels. Especially if towing great distance.
  • Thanks Steve for the checklist and thanks Don for the note on the dually.

DH (Steve) is looking at a Silverado 3500 HD diesel, blah, blah... I'll be sure to let him know what you said.
  • Contact an RV dealer in the area and ask them to recommend a mobile RV tech. Contact him and have an inspection done. Should not cost more than $50-100, money well spent.
  • We have a 34ckts and it has been 10 years of blissful camping. Cedar Creeks are some of the best all round fivers in the business. Customer service from the factory is top notch. Can they make a bad one? Yes but there few and far between. BTW. They are heavy so don't expect to tow it with anything less than a dually
  • You really need to check everything and I mean everything over. There will be no warranty so buying as is has its risks. May I recommend using this form?
    Pre delivery checklist

This is from the Keystone owners forum. It is a pdf file and safe to download.

I have used this list on the last 3 new fifth wheels I bought. It save me huge $ in inconvenience and time. It will also work for a used model. Read it thoroughly and follow it to a T. You won't regret it. You will then know exactly what you are buying and gain working knowledge of the rig at the same. Time. If the seller isn't willing to allow you to spend the time and do these things, then move on.
    Goodluck.
  • BTW, the individual selling the 5er is 60 miles north of Dallas and 30 miles or so north of Denton so there is no easy way to have a pro inspect it for us that I can think of.
