Not sure what you (the OP) mean by a "late model".
IMO the final pre-ULSD versions ('06 & earlier) are the best.
Anyway, (mostly) ditto the above for my '05.
NEVER had owned a Chrysler (Dodge) product -car or truck- before that.
Only negative disappointment was the supposedly bullet-proof 48RE went south at about 80K miles - with only infrequent towing.
Made me wish I had bought a row your own (manual trans).
BTW - other one tons....had an early ('85) Ferd with a 6.9 - bummer.
BIL (retired GM employee) has an '03 D/Max - electronic probs, injector replacement, etc.
And.....before I would purchase a new "tow vehicle" a used & singled HDT (reg as a MH or private truck) would be the only "truck" on my short list.
WAY more towing & stopping capacity, creature comfort, whistles
and bells for lots less $$.
