The pins carry no load whatsoever. The head of the hitch has female cylindrical profile sections that engage male cylindrical profile sections (with a thermoplastic bearing surface) on the uprights when the head is set in place. The pins merely fit below the male cylindrical profile sections to prevent the head from being removed even if the head release handles are pulled. That's why the pins can be padlocked to "prevent" the head from being stolen (as with all locks, they only keep honest people honest.)
