I've never considered a cap to be optional either. To op, are you referring to the (usually) fiberglass front exterior or back exterior wall? Could be aluminum too.

The molded rear cap might provide better aerodynamics but I would think the benefits would be negligible. They do look nicer.

Figured they all come with a front and rear cap...didn't know you could order a rear cap:h If the 5er has a "finished back end with seams in it, that is the rear end cap.....or maybe I'm completely misunderstanding your question.
