Rear kitchen.

We are looking at rear kitchen fifth wheels, as are coming from an 8 foot truck camper we are used to a rear kitchen and do not want to track dirt all over our newly discovered acreage. One salesman we talked to said read kitchens are not good on a fifth wheel. I know it is because they didn't have any in stock but DW is worried as we have never towed anything this big before. Those of you who have a rear kitchen, any regrets ?

  • We have a Wildcat currently and had a Rockwood, both with rear kitchens and have been able to leave the coffee maker on the counter without it moving more than and inch or two. Very seldom do we find stuff moved in the cabinets. Both units were in the 30' range.
  • I have always been told, by salesmen and previous owners alike, that rear kitchens are bad if you do any rough road driving. The rear of the trailer takes the most abuse from the road.
  • We heard stories of things breaking because there is more motion in the back than over the wheels but we just returned from 8 months and 12K miles and had no problems. When you're not cooking it is out of the way and you don't walk back and forth through the kitchen to get anywhere else in the rig. We feel our almost 33 feet is the perfect size. We camped in everything from Walmarts to local, state and federal parks as well as private RV parks and never had a problem getting in or out except in one state park in NY where the site sloped down from the access road and we had a lot of rain. Hooked up to another TV nose to nose and got us uphill and out.
  • All a matter of personal preference. We have good friends who have a rear kitchen and love it. They have never said there was any problem with dishes bouncing around. No regrets on their part.
  • I have read here that the kitchens in the rear of a trailer have the dishes/etc. tossed around a bit since that doesn't ride as smoothly as over the wheels?
