I was looking on etrailer recently and seem to remember you could buy an entire setup - jacks, motor and hardware for a few hundred dollars so hopefully this won't cost a fortune if you do need some/all of the parts replaced.

No. It appears that the bearing holding the verticle shaft(the acme threaded rod) failed and allowed the shaft to rub on the housing. Wore enough to weaken the shaft and it sheared off. I have the driven bevel gear in my hand witk a piece of shaft. I wish you were right.
