Resealing DRV A/C Dometic Penguin II Unit On Roof

Remove the cover you will see what you need to.

I would replace the gasket.

I had a leak problem with a new Cardinal. The unit was bolted down from the roof with lag bolts. I contacted the manufacturer who stated they should be torque down to 50” (inch) pounds. I did and no more leak. If that does not work then you will have to order a seal.

First try to gently tighten the 4 bolts from the top by removing the cover. If this does not work, you will need to pull the unit and replace the gasket. DO NOT try to use any caulk on the unit.

To install a new gasket, you will need to remove all 4 bolts, disconnect the wires and lift the unit off. Then install the gasket, sticky side to the bottom of unit. Re-position and tighten the bolts according to the manufacturers instructions.

When I pulled the a/c unit up off my DRV trailer I found the seal crushed, not reuseable. yes, just 4 lag bolts holding it to the roof. I went to the local truck shop that sold pick up truck camper covers that sit on the pick up truck box and bought a roll of the foam sealer stuff they used to make myself a new gasket. Also bought a tube of sealer caulk. Removed the old gasket, laid out the new foam and it had a sticky side, put that side on the trailer roof. Where any seam was used the caulk to make sure it was a continuous seal so no water could enter. I think the caulk was a weatherseal gasket stuff that was black sold at the auto parkts store. Also didn't have to un-wire the a/c unit, just used a piece of cardboard as a protection to the rubber roof and laid the a/c unit on its side. Total time was maybe 45 minutes for me to fix the leak we had inside the trailer when it rained.

Those of you who are saying your AC unit is fastened to the roof by 4 lag bolts - are you meaning four long bolts? Every air conditioner I have seen has been held on by four long bolts that run from the ceiling inside unit up to the air conditioner unit on the roof. This is what compresses the gasket by removing the cover inside and tightening those bolts from the inside. I have never seen lag bolts used to hold one on. They would have to go from the outside ceiling down thru the unit and roof to the inside and then somehow hold on to the inner part of the air conditioner. How does DRV do it? Sounds like they mount from the exterior which is contrary to everyone else.

I would only use the actual gasket on the roof. I wouldn't trust caulk at that seam you created with the roll stuff.

NO WAY would I use "FOAM to serve as a gasket. A closed cell gasket made for the purpose is what is needed!

Barney on a DRV there is NO access to the AC units from the inside as they have a totally ducted supply and return system. Notice the rectangular return grill and the round supply.

YES DRV AC units are held down by lag bolts, NOT thru bolts.
