Rock guard?

How many people use some sort of rock guard on the truck when pulling 5th wheel? I'm thinking of the ones that go across the back of the truck, usually in the bumper receiver.

We just got our first fifth wheel and I wasn't thinking of doing it because we rarely go on gravel except at slow speeds in the campground. Then, on the maiden voyage we stopped for fuel in a couple of gas stations with wet gravel which led to front of camper being pelted with mud/gravel from tires when we pulled out and hit the road again.

Do they work?
  • I've been using Rock tammers on my truck for two seasons and previously I used truck mudflaps mounted for brackets I had made for my old truck. I know it works as the flaps get mud and other stuff thrown on them and the front of the RV stays clean and rock free.

Can't speak to the flap-style guards, but my FW has aluminum diamond plate across the front. Since we boondock, you can hear rocks hitting it when going down dirt roads.
