rock tamers

I have a 2013 gmc z71 cc duramax, i have a gulf stream aztec i have the rock tamers to protect the front of the trailer i am wondering how it will work with the diesel when the truck goes into regen i know the egt gets very high durring this. I also have the stock exhaust on the truck now, i just dont want to burn a hole in the flap
  • I had my exaust pipe turned to come out the side to prevent the flap from melting. After 20,000 miles of towing it has not melted.....
  • The thing about the GM trucks, which is unique to them verses the others (Ford, Dodge) is that the megaphone exhaust exits under the rear bumper, out the back, not so much to the side like Ford and Dodge diesels do.

I'd be skeptical about running Rock Tamers on my 09 D/A
  • My rock guard melted on the side of the exhaust of the truck. It melted the plastic and deformed the guard itself. It also deformed the lower front of my 5er. My truck is a 2011. In the 1st year of towing with it the damage had occurred. It hasn't gotten any worse and we do put a lot of miles on especially when we head out west. I'm always looking for more damage. I did have both sides of the rock guard shortened because I have large mud flaps on the rear of the truck.
  • I melted a nice cutout in a rubber flap last summer. I don't have DEF and it don't regen. I guess it was just the heat of the 5" MBRP stainless tip.
  • I saw one recently that included a stainless heat shield attached to the right flap. Hearing some have had problems with discoloration on the front of their trailer, I'd spend a couple dollars for the metal.
  • Good to know, i guess the first time out this year i will throw them on and try it out. Thanks for the input
  • There are a few random (and rare) reports of melted fronts on 5ers, I have never seen one on a TT. I have seen MANY melted mudflaps on dpf equipped trucks around here. If it touches the exhaust, or is inline it to a few inches behind the tip - you are likely to have discoloration at minimum, if not disfigurement.
  • Shouldn't be a problem, I've been towing with DPF equipped diesels since 07.5 and never had the first issue with soot or anything else being deposited onto my 5er when towing....I've went through regens when towing, and again, no adverse affects to the 5er in tow..
