RV jargon

Just saw the term "mid-profile coach" used to describe a 5th wheel. What does that mean?
  • I think some of it may have to do with cab clearance as well. From my recent shopping it seems mid-profile units are more targeted towards folks towing with 6.5' beds and maybe trying to get by w/o a slider. My unit is a mid-profile and has the bedroom up front with a pretty low ceiling and no slide. Basically, you're not going to find a mid-profile 5th with a huge front living room with two slides.
  • They can't be over 13'6". Here in Texas, most service station awnings, etc. are high enough to handle 13'6" tall vehicles and/or trailers.

You'll have more trouble with a straight roof design like our Mobile Suites when it comes to getting it into a storage building with a slanted roof. Many of these storage buildings are 14' at the front but drop toward the rear.

  • How much of a limitation is a high profile? Do they fit under most structures? Is it mostly trees and such you have to worry about not clearing?

Just curious if it really makes it more difficult to tow.
  • I did a quick Google search and read some of the on-line literature from a half dozen RV manufacturers that are using the term "mid-profile". The thing that seems to be consistent with their verbiage and their photos, is a reference to the height of the front cap.

This from the Coachmen Web site was about as close as I could get. So putting the pieces together, I think it's a reference to the height of the front cap:

"Coachmen has redesigned its larger Chaparralâ„¢ fifth wheel floorplans to incorporate a new mid-profile front end, ... "
  • Has to do with 'height'

    Fifth Wheel Profiles

Fifth wheels are available in four height profiles: Low, Mid-Low, Mid, and High Profile. Basically, the higher the profile, the more headroom, and lack of a step ("flush floor") in the upper cabin (which is usually a bedroom)

    At 13'4" I guess our 5vr would be HIGH-profile
