I use a receiver from the house along with an HD Dish receiver mounted on a tri-pod. Take a minute to level the tri-pod( I have level permanently mounted on the tri-pod.It takes about 5 minutes to find the satellites on a bad day.
Same here, only I use a milk crate with 2-3 water jugs for my mount base. Set it down wiggle it to get level and shoot the sat. with my compass.
Occasionally I have to shim up one side of the crate if I am on asphalt or concrete that is not level, but most of the time in grass, sand or gravel it is just a matter of pushing down on one side as you wiggle it. The water jugs act as weights to keep it steady and prevent wind distrubance after set up.
Anyone that can use a compass, level, and has a little diy sense can get a signal in 5 min. using the house dish. Plus, as cpaulens said, with some extra coax cable you can set your dish up away from your rig when the trees are in the way.
You do have to know your zip code if you do not want to guess where the sat. is. Although I have gotten pretty good at guessing based on how far east/west-north/south of where ever I was the day or week before.
