Satellite and Extended Camping

We are brand new to RV camping. Our fifth wheel came with a Winegard satellite auto-locator/receiver and tripod. Right now we don't think we will ever use it - the room it takes up might be better used. We plan on an extended camping next year (12 months out or more). We have a digital antenna on the roof to get local channels when available. How important is it to keep (or sell) this receiver? What is the cheapest satellite service for basic TV when on the road (we have cable now so know nothing about satellite)?
  • #1) it doesn't cost $100. for basic DishNetwork stations (check online)
#2) Getting locals (or ANY tv) at some RV parks is next to impossible. Airwaves just don't "get there".
#3) Using a WiFi usually, or so we've found, has a limit on GBs you can use. Let me know if you find one that has unlimited. My understanding, if you're streaming from the phone, you can't receive phone calls. Not an option for me.
#4) Most local RV parks we've been in have said to NOT stream programming or movies. In fact, one even wanted the SmartPhone acct. #s to be able to track us in case we violated their rule (we opted out). Not only that, but they usually had very weak signals.....very slow to even look at this forum.
  • We just don't want to spend 100.00 a month (if that's what it costs) for satellite service if we can get some local service off the antenna. We're selling our home before we go so there is nothing to piggy-back off of. We're not very techno-savy yet, but I think we could steam a lot of programming from wifi off the phone or local camp connection.
  • Based on our experience I would keep it. We have been to many campgrounds ,some actually within the city limits, that had NO local channels that we could get with our built in "Off the air " antenna. Thus, no TV unless you have a satellite receiver.
  • What brand receiver? Dish and now Direct both offer a month to month service. Personally, I would dump the cable at home and sign up for satelite service. Then for no additional cost take your receiver(s) from home when you travel.

The service is rather cheap after you get setup and buy/rent the equipment needed.

Just adding the RV on to an existing SAT TV account is $5 I think it is but you may need to purchase or rent another SAT RCVR Dish etc...

We used to bring along a DISH and bedroom SAT RCVR and it worked rather good for us but when the NATL BROADCAST came out with their digital high def TV signals we started just using that with our OTA crankup BATWING antenna picking up the HDTV signals from the local towns. This method of course cuts out alot of SAT/CABLE TV programs we like to watch like CNN TNT USA that are not on the local NATL BROADCAST TV signals...

Kinda depends on what is best for you would be the answer.
