satellite tv

We would like to have satellite tv for the camper. We are thinking of getting the portable dish and receiver, but not sure where the direct tv service comes from. I called direct tv because we are having that installed at home next week and they said we needed to call winegard to get service for the camper!! It doesn't make sense to me! Anyone have satellite and can tell me what I need to do....thanks

  • I tried the tripod with flat receiver and could not get it to work. Tried the dish receivers on the roof and the could be a pain. Then wine guard carryout came out. Worked pretty good. I've tried Direct, but later went to Dish at home. I don't want to be carrying receiver out of the house so bought a receiver for Dish, and a Tailgator. This is definitely the best for us. Dish has been great to help us. One thing I like they only charge about 7.00 a month on my regular bill to have TV in the RV. Really makes a nice setup. This comes from 11 years of trying different receivers as well as Direct, and Dish.
  • In my opinion a regular dish is difficult to aim. It took us several months to get used to it and lots of frustration. I would get the cube that automatically locks on to the satellite. Ask DirecTV when they come to the house for an extra receiver that they don't hook up. They charge for each receiver. I think $6 a month? You can leave that one in the camper. If you don't want to pay the extra monthly fee, you can disconnect one receiver from home and take it with you. We found that we liked having the extra receiver. That should be all you need.
Note: once the card inside the receiver is activated and there is no power to the receiver for 30 days, the card becomes inactive and you will need to reset it. We did that online, but you can also call Directv to do it.
Some campers are not wired for satellite. The TV or Cable input in the service bay may not be the proper cable to carry the satellite signal. You may have to run the cable directly to the receiver. Some people run it through a window.
  • We have used DirecTV for years with a portable dish and tripod. If you only want/need SD, then Camping World has a bunch of them. We generally see that VuQube out on the road.
If you want HD, then you're going to have to go with a Slimline Dish and a Tripod. We've been very happy with TV4RV.com. We had all kinds of installers tell us that Dish is a better way to go for HD, that DirecTV was tough to aim, etc. In my experience couldn't have been further from the truth. Easier to set up my slimline vs. the oval.
Dishpointer.com is outstanding and has a great app if you have a smartphone.
    Best of luck to you!
  • When I had Direct installed at my home they gave me an extra dish and 50 foot of cable to use on the MH. I did have to buy the tripod for the dish though. I just take a box from the home with me as most on here do. JMO
