shattered window

Pulled into the campground the other day and found a shattered window on the side of the 5er. This is a frame-less window. Heartland won't cover it under the warranty. Heartland and 2 other dealers tells me I have to buy the complete window that I can't buy just the glass. The glass can be removed with out removing the complete window. Dose anyone know where I can buy just the window glass.
  • Nonsense on replacing the whole window. They just want to dig deep into your pocket!

If that glass can come out with the window in place then it can be put in with the window in place.

I suggest making a template from a rigid piece of material, such as thin but stiff hardboard, or thin plastic sheet or similar. Use basic cardboard to start to get your shape, then transfer it to the thinner rigid board. Put it in the opening to make sure the shape is perfect. Find something round that has the exact radius of your window, a jar lid, small plate, something. It's easier to trace your radius with something the same size.

Then take it to a glass shop and have them make one. You will have to specify the tint, as it comes in many colors and shades. They will need to know the exact thickness, so bring them a broken piece to measure.

Most glass shops can cut the glass, but they need stock of the right glass. Tempering glass requires a special process of heat treating it in an oven designed for that purpose. If you use a local shop they will likely have to send it out for tempering. The glass has to be cut to shape first, then tempered. You cannot cut tempered glass.

I would go directly to a glass production shop that has the equipment to cut and temper. Local guy will do that then mark up the piece to sell to you.

(I've been in the glass business for 40 plus years)
  • Had the same thing happen to me a few years ago. I just happened to be staying a few miles from : RV Glass Solutions, near Eugene Oregon. I was given first class service. They had to order a glass and it took a few days to get in. They are nation wide - check them out online.
  • fly4fun It may not be this easy. Is the glass panel curved ? Having glass "bent" is very expensive, then it would have to be tempered (probably at another shop) add at least a week, then back to whoever cut, and bent it. Could easily be several weeks to a month, and $1000, and many shops may not feel it is worth getting involved in. I own a custom furniture shop and work with glass companies, and have had glass "bent".
  • Do you have comprehensive with glass coverage insurance on your trailer? Might be something to look into.
  • I am sure any decent glass shop can make up a new tinted tempered glass window. Its just a matter of getting them the specs (from an identical window) and maybe a week to have it done. Just a matter of making some calls.
  • Would this be a dual pane window? Is it tempered glass? I blew out a dual pane window a couple years ago, and got a large glass & plastics shop to order a custom dual pane panel to install in its place. Call some of the glass shops in your area. Surely there is one that can handle the job.
  • Local glass shop might be able to do it. Only way to find out is to call and/or take a different window into them.
