While I think FE was harsh in the way that he said it, he is essentially correct - the tires should have MORE capacity than the GAWR.
I recommend 15% more.
Barry, would you please go tell that to Keystone and the other manufactures that de-rate 7K axles to 6750 and install ST tires rated to 3420 lbs. Or tires rated to 35xx pounds on 7K axles.
We have been around and around on the use of ST tires on trailers with little results. However progress can be made. Our Cardinal Club has gotten Forest River to start using wheels rated to 3750 and has a factory option for GY G614's.
Those that keep saying that ST tires will work if one maintains them correctly are doing a dis-service to the uninformed, and some appear to be an agent for the industry.
Just about any LT235/85R16E or LT245/75R16E in the real world will perform much better on a 5200-6000 lb axle than the current offerings of ST235/80R16E's.
People need to be smart enough to tell the difference between marketing and what works out on the highway. If this kind of tire performance(from ST tires) was on a car or pickup it would be on the nightly news regularly until resolved!
OH and BTW the OP on this thread has a trailer with a GVWR of 11685, so he will have 20-25 percent extra capacity per tire with LT's rated to 3042. He could easily use one of the smaller 16" LT tires rate to 2680 pounds and still have extra capacity per tire.
