I wasn't sure if I should start a new post but don't mean to hijack the thread. I've read & pondered over many TIRE threads in this forum to the point of going near blind but yet seems I still have a lifetime worth of reading before reaching a confident solution on my own. Sorting out opinions from facts has become mind boggling. It's obvious there are many very knowledgeable seasoned tire experts on this forum but alot of info is strewn across an ocean of several thousand posts. I guess I'm another lost soul adding to the sea of tire questions.
Just looking for some advice and options to help me wade through all the info.
My fiver:
GVWR: 15,000 lbs
Axles weight: ~12,000 lbs (11,720 loaded from last summer)
Current tires: ST235/80R/16E, max load 3520 @ 80 psi
Placard reads:
Front GAWR: 7000 lb, ST235/80R16E, Rims 7x16, 80psi
Rear GAWR: 7000 lb, ST235/80R16E, Rims 7x16, 80psi
I'm not a full-timer nor even a half-timer and don't go long distances but this summer have a 3000 mile trip. Current tires are now 7 yrs old; I know, please no wise crack remarks.
Here's my question or perhaps my dilemma...
I don't want to upgrade the wheels but going with a compatible LT tire has much lower load capacity; I think around 3000 lbs @80 psi.
Also it seems for a compatible LT tire based on my wheels I would have to get 235/85R/16E which I'm not sure would fit clearance wise. I would not have an issue if a different tire would raise the trailer but unsure about axle clearance.
A compatible ST tire (Maxxis M8008) has max load of 3420 @80 psi which falls slightly shy of my current tire rating.
Still ok?
Not sure I've provided enough info but What brand/type tire would you recommend or consider compatible without upgrading my wheels and still meet minimum load capacity requirement?
I've not had any issues (knock on wood) with ST tires on my previous fiver or the current. I'm very conscientious of how much weight I load on the axles, maintain correct tire pressure and keep hwy speed at 65mph or less. CampingWorld tried selling me G614's which obviously my rims will not support. This is another problem...who can I trust? Hence, I figured I'd pause and try a more direct approach instead of reading into oblivion.
I don't want to upgrade wheels if I can help it as I'm on a tight budget due to wedding, graduations, and other events this summer.
For those who think I'm crazy feel free to say so; I won't take offense ;).
