Storing A New Fifth Wheel?

Well I have a dilemma! I recently purchased a 12 foot tall Fifth Wheel and my indoor storage unit has 12 foot doors....11'6" with garage door. Seems as though my fiver is 6 inches too tall for my storage! So...please give me your honest opinions on storing a brand new fifth wheel away from your home.

Is outside storage hard on it? Live in Missouri...

Open Pole barn I guess is better than nothing?

I'm now scrambling to figure out where the heck I'm going to store my new Fiver! ??
  • Keep a real GOOD coat of wax on it... and I use aerospace 303 on all the decals and plastic ( if any) ... ALL my trailers have sat outside
  • Our 2005 has been outside under cloth cover from Camping World since new. Third cover. 2 feet of snow on it at times. It has had no problems. Gets waxed twice a year. Still looks new, no oxidation. Just keep the sun off. Roof is in great shape. If you cover it, wax it, it will be fine. Only a problem a couple years with mice. I have a bucket trap for them now. No more mice.
  • Don't know about Missouri, but the UV kills us here in CO. Our first one was outside and faded to chalk in about 4 years, graphics peeled, tires cracked, plastic yellowed. But that's part of it I guess.

We said never again, so the last one went in totally enclosed storage and I never even had to wax it after 7 years. The difference was amazing. It really didn't change the retail when we sold it enough to offset the cost of the higher storage, but it definitely sold before other like kinds did.

Our 5er is in an RV storage facility. Covered with power but not enclosed. Would not want it to sit out in our hot summer Texas sun and 100+ temps and teens and snow/ice in the winter.
Still looks great after 7 years.

So do you actually use the trailer if you don't take it out in the sun??
  • It's the sun which is the enemy. Of course a pole barn with 14 feet to the square is not cheap.
  • Mine has been outside on the south side of my house for 8 of it's none years of life. Most of us dont have the luxury of storing inside. It is not going to hurt things as long as you keep it properly sealed
  • Yep, we had same dilemma. Bought a cover and we might get 2 years out of it.

  • We have kept our fiver under an open pole barn for 7 years now. We bought it new in April 2005. Built the pole barn in the fall of 2006. At least under the pole barn, the roof does not get exposed to all the weather straight down on it such as the sun, rain, snow etc. It would def be better than sitting out completely exposed .... also, the dealer we purchased it from said that if you are keeping it stored on concrete that you need to pull the tires up on some small boards as the elements in the concrete will eat the tires!
