Suitable tow vehicle for 5th wheeler

We are trying to get our heads around all this weight business and wonder if we are doing something wrong because the way we are reading into it, there is nothing in Australia that will legally tow a FW with a GVW of 11,700 (5,318Kgs) Jayco Eagle 30.5 BHLT 35ft or the Sunnybrook Raven 2980BH also 35.5ft with GVW of 12,260 (5,573Kgs) that ive been looking at.
Even one of our biggest TV's the Ford f-250 7.3ltr turbo diesel would struggle.
You guys must have some giant tow vehicles over there or I am calculating things all wrong? If I'm not then I gotta seriously look at a much lighter FW or go back to the drawing board & consider a TT again.

  • The 7.3 PSD in a F250 has several HP numbers up to 275 depending on year model.
    '94-'97 = 215 hp
    '99.....= 235
    '02-'03 = 250 auto
    ...........275 manual.

Not a big power house on hp but the later models with 250-275 hp and over 500 ft lbs with the right gearing should have no issues pulling 11K-12K unless the truck is loaded down with heavy extras.
  • Mik68 the F250 made for Ausralia in 06 from memory allowed for op to about 5400 kg the thing to be carful of is the pin weight as in Ausralia u are not allowed to go over fords recommendations for GWM and also if u go to 5000 kg or over u must have air brakes on FW.
  • Mike68 I know you are a newbie with 5vers in Australia but
people use an IVECO Daily or a Japanese light / light medium truck
To haul one of those around. For really heavy stuff 50ft plus a true MDT 33,000lbs/52000lbsGVM. These are custom builds. An IVECO Daily will tow a 38ft 5ver. Same 5ver in both photos 6.5 tonne, or 14,300lb.
    IVECO DAILY 5the Wheeler.

Light HINO Truck 5th Wheeler This climbs better than the RAM mor stable under braking.

Similar 33ft 5ver pulled by a RAM all 6.5 tonne ATM

  • I two a 12,140gvw 5th with a 2500 equipped with an I-6,359CID.Legally.
  • There are some pictures circulating on this forum if people using Hino or similar trucks pulling large fifth wheels. They might be a good alternative for you
  • Frequently the issue with an F250 is the pin-weight, not the GVW. I've towed with an F250 (6.8L V10) in the weights you are talking about and it is possible.
Many (not all) model years the difference between an F250 and an F350 is one spring in the rear. That would be easy to cure in a good suspension shop.

Some model years they have the same rear spring, others they have different front systems. But there are actually few differences and none in the power-plant.
  • I guess it depends on the weight rating on the F-250 over there.

The 7.3L should have plenty of power to tow a 12,000 pound RV behind the truck. Don''t know how well the F-250 can handle the expected 2,000 pounds of hitch weight though.

Over here, we would recommend a heavier duty F-350. Since 2005, the GVWR of the F-250 went from 8,800 pounds in 2004 to about 10,000 in 2005. The F-350 SRW went from 9,900 GVWR to about 11,500 with the changes including new and larger brakes, 17 or 18" rims with heavier weight ratings, and tires good for 3,250 pounds each.

We also have a class 5 truck called the F-550 with a GVWR up to 19,000 pounds, using 19.5" tires.
