Light oil to me would be more like 3-n-1 or even a light motor oil.
I would not trust WD-40 even though it is called out in the manual.
Both the replacement and the one that failed were the newer model with the plastic wear plates. I used WD-40 just because they were so confident about it in the manuel. It actually really irritates me now that I have discovered that they changed the lube instruction to the opposite of what they said in the past. They replaced the hitch but it cost me $1000 in towing and pin box damage which they refused to compensate me for.
