I think you need to get over your apprehension to allow your engine to rev above 3000 RPMs. These OHC engines are built to rev. Staying under 3K did not allow you to reach the engine's peak torque and HP and perhaps lugging, which is counterproductive to peak engine performance.
And you are correct, that weight of a 5th wheel does not justify (financially) a diesel. As usual, this will ultimately turn into a diesel/gas debate started by a few select diesel owners.
