Tonneau Cover Retractable that will work with 5W Hitch

Hi,

I am looking to get a retractable tonneau cover that will work with my Chevy 3500 Short bed and 5th Wheel Hitch.

I have heard that sometimes there is not enough room for hitch (mine is Curtis Slider) and the area need for the roll up. Anybody using one without problems?

I am not talking about the height of the hitch. Just the room you need for the roller box behind window and hitch.

Thanks

Tom

I have exact same truck as you, 2015 Silverado 3500 crewcab 6'6"box Duramax w/ 5th wheel. We have a retractable tonneau, BAK Industries Rollbak and have been very happy with it.

It's the 2nd retractable cover that we've had with our 5th wheel. We had a Retrax on a Dodge Ram 2500 short bed. Of the 2 retractable covers I would say I like the Rollbak better that the Retrax. The rollbak sits lower to the truck so it gives the 5th wheel more clearance. The retrax was a decent tonneau but much more expensive. I really didn't think it was better and we had to buy a new rolling top for the unit because the original separated. It wasn't covered by warranty but they gave us a "discounted" price so I wasn't real impressed by that. Also the Rollbak has a smaller canister that the Retrax so less lost of bed space.

I considered a folding unit but was concerned about clearance between bed rails and 5er. Generally I have been happy with the Rollbak. The only negative is the fact that it's not totally water tight in a hard rain. We do get some leakage at the edges of the tailgate. It might be my fault in the installation. The instructions could have gone into greater detail on installation.

There was no issue with room for canister and hitch with either tonneau. Both had plenty of room for hitch and canister.
  • Here is something else, just thinking out of the box, because I have one.

    Softopper.com

It folds down like a convertible top, and takes up only about 5" when down.
  • Check out the BAKFlip VP cover. Although we don't have a 5th wheel we do have this cover and I believe it works well with 5th wheel hitches.

It is two years old now and still looks and works like a new one. Very easy to fold up and it keeps all water out of the bed.

  • I have an Access manual roll up tonneau cover. it works great, have pulled well over 20,000 miles with it. I like it more than automatic ones as it as a much smaller footprint when rolled up. I can store my generator in front of the hitch and cover it with the tonnea cover when not driving. When driving the 2 clips must be fastened to keep the cover from unrolling. I also have room to store firewood up front when not carrying the generator, my friends with retractable ones don't have the ease of access to their firewood.
  • Almost any should work assuming that the cover mounts on top of the bed rail and that the hitch is below the bed rail. That pertains to everyone one I've seen but there could be oddballs out there.

I had a rollup cover and while it seems as if it is a good idea, unless the cover roll locks firmly in place, firmly enough to resist the gale force winds under the fifth wheel, then they will unroll and cause you endless grief. I went to a trifold on ours. But I'm not sure how well that would work on a shortbed.`````
