That heavy diesel engine is using up a lot of your GVWR, but the weight is on the front. You still have a HD truck, with around 6,000 lbs RAWR, and tires likely rated for 6,000 plus. IMO, that truck would handle a FW, with a max loaded pin weight of 2,000 lbs. This would be a FW loaded weight of about 10,000.

No, all hitches are not equal, and a sliding hitch will be heavy. A good quality, user friendly hitch, such as the B&W Patriot 16K, would be a good choice in a non-slider, and has a lot of adjustment.

I never said a slider would be "required" but rather that the OP would want one as the chances of smacking the body of any 5th is a very real possibility if his truck is a shortbox ... and worth mentioning since the OP himself pointed out that he's a "total newb" who may well not be aware of this possibility.

Since you're wanting to "split hairs" let's split this ... these aren't GVW numbers but rather GVWR numbers - Gross Vehicle Weight Rating ... GVW is the weight of the rig as loaded ready to camp and to be towed and will (must) always be no greater than it's GVWR.

I disagree that a slider is =required=. My '02 D'max doesn't have one, and I can't hit the cab at full lock, right or left, going forward. ALL will hit in reverse; the slider just gives you more room before you =do= hit. Yes, some trucks might turn shorter, so the OP needs to know his minimum turn radius to be sure. A quick check is to measure the distance from the center of the pin to the corners of the FW, then measure the distance from the center of the pin slot on the hitch to the cab. If that is > than the FW's number, you won't hit in normal conditions. Yes, uneven ground can change he equation, but how often does that happen, in reality?

OP, I agree that a TT will give you the ability to tow a larger RV, but the tradeoffs in towability, storage and ease of hitching/unhitching are not equal, IMO. There are a =lot= of light-weight FWs out there now; most called "half-ton" towable. While I would only tow one with the newest half-tons, they are there. The KZ Durango 1500 line all have a GVW of 10,500 and the Jayco Eagle HT line all have a GVW of 9,950, either of which should fit your truck with ease. Just watch the cargo capacity, as some models are fairly anemic, so you may have to balance that with the floorplan.

Have seen an awful lot of these! I agree number matter but there is something about this design.

You can pull a lot more TT than 5er with the same truck.

If you were *not* one of the "unfortunates" who lost their life (including a CHP officer & his family), it didn't really matter..:R

Thousands & thousands of Toyotas on the road before and after, and still thousands & thousands of happy owners.

My adult son has over 200K miles on his. Hops in and off he goes!..:C

Get the right hitch, I like PullRite superglide for short bed
Have the trailer inspected by a Certified Tech BEFORE you buy it
check Tires for dry-rot
check electrical systems and appliances
Check for water damage
Check Frame & King pin
