Towing 5th wheel with 2015 Silverado 1500?

Crew cab, 6.5' box, 5.3 Ecotec with 3.73 gear & max trailering package. Anyone have issues towing 9,000lbs with 1,800lbs hitch weight? Never towed a 5'er & Chevrolet doesn't publish specs for, nor do they recommend, towing one. Looking for input from those with experience. Basically wondering if I should stick with my travel trailer or can I safely consider a 5th wheel. Thanks for any & all feedback.
  • If you are saying loaded pin wt 1800 plus 200 for hitch, you would need to know your truck rear axle wt loaded to go camping, all people gear, and fuel. If this rear axle wt was 2500, you could not add another 2000. I am thinking your RAWR is about 4,000? You could not have 4,500 on the rear axle.

What is max tire rating? Could the rear tires carry 4,500 lbs?

I'm guessing on your loaded truck rear axle weight. You would have to weigh it to know. In any case, you can see the problem, with the FW in question.

    I'm glad I'm not alone :)

For comparison sake my 5th has dry weights close to what you mention and when loaded up I'm at my 3000# max payload for a 2500. Doing this with a 1500 doesn't seem wise.
  • For what it is worth, we used to tow a 5th wheel with our 1991 Chevy 1500 with a 5 speed and 350 cu. in. engine. Once we got a trailer that was heavier than 6200 lbs. we were out of our league and immediately went to a 3/4 ton (2500) Duramax diesel.

I have to agree with all of the above, you are way out of the capability of the 1500.

No way... Assume your quoting DRY weights which are meaningless.

Not dry. I added about 1,000lbs weight & 200lbs hitch. I'm expecting to hear a lot of no's because I figure it's too much but I'm stubborn & need to be told "No" about a lot of things in life.
  • Not that 5ver, the manufactures are starting to build fifth wheels designed for 1/2 ton trucks, keep looking
  • Far too heavy for your truck. You are firmly in 250 territory.
