Towing a boat

I have a 2015 Keystone Outback and I just bought a tracker boat. I see people hauling the camper and a trailer hooked up to the back of the 5th wheel. how do you folks do that. is there a website and I did try searching here and did not find anything.

I know the back bumper is off limits (?) but someone else must be doing this now.

Boat hitch weight is light and boat only weighs 1500 lbs.
  • I'd be asking around about a weld/fab shop that has done this in the past. RV dealers, shops, etc. You need to find someone that has some sense of structural fabrication.
I had Smitties welding in Houston do mine. Bumper is now .250" wall 4"x4" with plenty of fully welded reinforcements. All I carry is a bicycle. It could handle the GoDevil, but not the bay boat.
See y'all in Tulsa in January. Chili Bowl.
  • Thanks folks, boat has a 60 horse and all I could do is tow it. Running by a shop that sells trailers tomorrow and will see what they can do after looking at the frame.
  • Dog, You don't say what length your Outback is. But if you're within the length limits,65 feet. In the states you plan to travel.
Then the first thing to do is install to hitch that will take the weight. The factory rear bumper won't handle it over time. It's made to hold the waste hose.
I've ran from Mo to Texas, towing a heavier boat for 12 years.
    Just know your limits.
  • How big of a tracker boat did you buy, if its the small 14 footer with 30-40 hp you might be able to build a rack on top of truck and carry it there, have seen some do it.
  • I have checked what states allowed this and the regs. I just trout fish and will be going from Oklahoma to Branson and Ok to Bull Sholes in Arkansas.3 to5 hours one way and slow.

Looking at the repliesi need to find a trailer or towing center and see what cost it be to add one.

Thanks folks, just wondered who installed one and costs if you remember.
  • Also, check with your insurance carrier to see if they will cover a triple tow situation and what they require...they may not cover anything if an accident
  • Not legal in Florida except for pre-registered commercial vehicles and then only on Interstates.

Not often enforced, but it can be if the LEO decides to!
  • If you want to come to CA be prepared to have a commercial A license with the doubles/triple trailer endorsement, valid 2 year medical, and enrolled in a random drug and alcohol testing program as a minimum. BTW if your TV does not meet the definition of a truck tractor and both trailers are less than 28' 6" then you must be 65' or less combined length. (If truck tractor and trailers 28' 6" or less then 75' is max to get off interstate onto access routes). You need to have enough 5th wheel hitch capacity for both vehicles weight you tow. If I missed anything , others will fill in the gaps.
  • Yes, the hitch can be custom built, using the frame, and cross bracing for strength. I have gone this route on previous FW, but have a factory receiver on my current FW. Mine, and I think most factory receivers are rated for 300 lbs hitch/3,000 lb trailer weights. Your 1500 lb boat should be an easy tow.

My double tow experience worked well, with the 2nd trailer tracking very nicely.

  • First off: Is it legal to do so in your state? It's not legal in every state. Some require special DL certifications, many have length restrictions. Then there's the hitch on the back of the fiver is usually going to be custom built, attaching to the frame of the fiver.
