Travel in Texas

We are about to leave San Marcos heading west and it was suggested that we take route 46 from New Braunfels to Boerne has anyone taken this route and how is the travel? Thanks
  • I go from Fredricksberg to Kerrville about 28 miles then I-10 and it's clear sailing. I set cruise for 68 and never look back.
Be safe and Happy Turkey day!

I don't know where you're heading, but if you're going farther west on I-10, an alternate might be I-35N to US-290 west through Dripping Springs, Johnson City and Fredericksburg. US-290 west intersects with I-10 between Kerrville and Junction. US-290 is 4 lane until well west of Fredericksburg.

That's a nice drive and some really good German food along the route.
  • US 290 is a beautiful drive. We've been taking that route for years.
  • Thank you for all your help. We are in San Marcos now and heading to Arizona in the morning.

  • Excellent route...will save you about 45 minutes by cutting across instead of going down to San Antonio and then back up to Boerne, TX.
  • The road is good and I always take it to get over to I10 westbound. In recent years the area has built up quite a bit and it can get quite busy at times. Not so good during school transportation hours as there's a couple of schools to deal with and the 281/46 area has gotten quite commercial. My GPS wants to send me down to 1604 around the north side of San Antonio these day but I don't want the extra mileage. It's getting to the point there's no good option.
  • We just traveled part of that route last week - met 46 coming down from Canyon Lake to hit I-10 at Boerne. Like most of the southern hill country, it's hilly with curves, but no problem with the rig in my signature.
