Traveling to Myrtle beach

Hello I will be making a trip to Myrtle beach and will be traveling down US 23 in eastern ky down to route 58 to I-81toward wythville, va then getting on I-77. I was wondering if there is any steep hills to worry about when taking this route. We have a 40’ jayco eagle premier and wanted to avoid taking the wv turnpike. I found this route on gps and it seems better than taking I-26. Ive read on here the steep points on I-26 so this route seems to be best but wanted to get some different opinions of people that’s traveled this route. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Well there is Fancy Gap leading down 77 toward NC

coming down Fancy Gap is very steep. Once down there is nothing but small hills, Once past Charlotte basically flat. If you have 'jake or exhaust' brakes then no problem with Fancy Gap. Just get in the right lane and gear down.
I would not suggest coming down US52. Very steep and curve. Single
lane most of the way down.

I might add that US52 down hill has a 8 ton limit. This is to keep
big rig trucks coming down to avoid the weight scales when you come down I77 and cross into NC.

If heading to Myrtle from Wythville there is no reason to go towards Charlotte you go from 77 to 52 south through Winston Salem and then hit I74 towards state rt 38 which takes you to highway 501 which will take you straight into Myrtle depending on which campground you are going to you may want to cut off 501 and hit 544 which takes you to south myrtle straight into Ocean Lakes Campground area. Lakewood is a second from the intersection also and the state park is another minute up the road from there.

    x2 on this

X 3 on this way I go every time

When you get to Charlotte, take I-485(Pineville) which takes you around Charlotte. Better road and adds no time to the trip. 485 will drop you back onto I-77 below Charlotte. I-77 thru Charlotte is a ***T show.

You are not kidding on the ***T show ! heard it's a multi year project much like I-4 in Orlando.

  • What is your tow vehicle? You are adding 100+ miles to your trip by going up to Wytheville. US23/58 outs you at the start of I-26. I-26 has some pulls, but unless you are terribly overloaded or under powered, you shouldn't have an issue. No matter the route you have to cross the mountain.

If you are set on not going I-26, I would consider going to I-40 and going through the gorge. Depending where you are coming from in KY, might be shorter than I-77.
