Trip Report - El Pasos out of Ridgecrest

We had a great time last weekend riding through the El Pasos. There are so many trails and canyons tucked away in those hills that you can just wander around and never hit the same place twice.

There's a cabin up on a peak overlooking Garlock that we rode to years ago and I haven't been able to find it since. We finally made it back there. It's insanely windy up there, so the cabin is held down by cables anchored into the ground. When you zoom into the satellite photos of the place, you can actually see the shadows of the cables on the ground.

Friday night was stormy and rainy. We've been snowed on out there before, but I can't remember having it rain all night before. Saturday was perfect with all the dust held down from the rain.

Saturday night we rode into town in Randsburg to catch the live band at The Joint. That place used to be pretty dank and scary, but it's a fun destination now.

Sunday morning we were cruising around and I found a canyon without any four-wheel tire tracks leading into it, which always makes me cautious. My wife got out and hiked down to scout it out and told me to just do it. It was a fun descent, but I think she only told me to go on because she didn't want to hike back up. It took a while to get our buddies to come down. Karma caught up to them though and gave them a flat.

There are lots of open mines out there still. Luckily most of them are pretty well marked or covered up.

There's an old sandblasted Gideons' Bible crusted open to the Psalms in the living room near the stove. Seems like a pretty peaceful place to read the word.

I'm glad my friends finally made it down, because I didn't want to have to climb back up.

Two plugs and he was back on the trail again.

  • Awesome pictures. That cabin is great.

What a great country we live in to explore all these wonderful places :)

    Stay safe!
  • Where did you camp?
We were at Charlie's Place (Wagon Wheel) from Friday afternoon to Sunday.

We were supposed to camp right across the road from there, above Ridgecrest, but one of the guys in our group was having trouble with his moho and he parked at the first spot he could make it to, just past the tracks on Searles. Is it called Dirt Diggers Camp?

I thought of you on Monday. I had to take my truck back to Justin to have the turbo fixed. That guy is a wizard. Thanks for the referral.

I saw your group, right next to the tracks right? Thought that was odd, told Pam they were using the box cars as wind breaks! We call that area "Prospectors camp" because they used to stage their enduros from there. Digger Camp is north of Searles cutoff then right, big open area east of the RR tracks where they end, about two miles north of where you were. Check your PM's sending you a pin drop request.
  • That was a different group. There were just three of us.

We couldn't figure out why they camped so close to the tracks like that. They literally camped right in the road. We had to drive around them a couple times. Weird.

So we saw a camp kind of up in the hills closer to Ridgecrest that was cordoned off with a cable boundary and a BLM sign that said "Prospectors Camp". It didn't make sense to me, because I always thought Prospectors was where we camped near the Searles / RR crossing and Dirt Diggers was further north off 395. That's what confused me about the names.

We've always just called this spot "The Rally Site" because that's where we used to have the big rallies until the BLM shut us down.

Everyplace has a weird name with our group. I sent you a pin to "The Bar", because there's a BBQ and a bar-top built into the rocks just outside of camp. It's a great spot, especially if you let your dogs run free. The dogs won't bother anyone up there.
