After looking at one ton trucks with dually wheels, I prefer the one ton trucks with single rear wheels. What would I be giving up not getting the dually wheels?

More carrying capacity, more stability, not having to pay for 2 extra tires.....just off the top of my head

Go to the manufacturers website for that truck model and look at the specifications. You'll see that the DRW has a higher towing and carrying capacity than the same model SRW. You give up maneuverability which even with a SRW is all that great. You probably take a hit on fuel mileage too with a DRW. Plus your tire expenses increase by 50%. Whether you need a DRW depends on what you expect to tow. SRW will tow medium sized fifth wheels easily, but when you get to the longest and heaviest fivers you'll want a DRW.

So paying a little more for fuel..don't know if all that equates to 50% more on expenses....Don't know about giving up maneuverability...heck, I still go through drive throughs..May take a bigger parking space, but truck is my daily driver as well as my TV and it maneuvers in and out of traffic just fine:)

The pin weight of the 5er is the primary issue of DRW vs SRW. They have really boosted the carrying capacity of the newer trucks. But there still comes a point where you need the DRW due to heavy pin weights. Check the payload ratings of the truck(s) of interest and then see if it is enough to carry your 5er.

Should have bought a DRW the first time and chose not to. Second go around I did and couldn't be happier and safer.. If you ever had a rear blow out , with a SRW you only have 1 tire left. With a DRW you will have 3 tires left to keep you under control.. Just my .02

2014 Ford Tow Guide

Go look it up. Diesels:
SRW is about 11,400# GVWR (varies a little)
DRW is 14,000# GVWR.

GCVWR
SRW is 23,500#
DRW is 30,500#

If you want the tow and cargo capacity, the DRW wins.

. A DRW will have a higher payload rating than a SRW. This is what counts when towing a 5th wheel. If you're referring the weight comment to pulling power, the difference is minor, but as stated, not the reason for a DRW. Most DRW have a higher axle gear ratio to make up any difference in the trailer weight limit. Decision on SRW vs DRW for a 5th wheel depends on total payload (pin weight plus cargo) not towing capacity.

My wife gets motion sick so she has to drive. Pulls the 5er everywhere and drives the DRW everywhere when we go out RVing. Now if only I could get her to learn to back it up :).
