Try Before you Buy

I wasn't sure where to post this but does anyone have any ideas on basically renting a fifthwheel & truck to see how we like the set up,
I live in S.E. Michigan and tried to google it but did not see anything for my area.

DW and I think we would like to upgrade to a Fifthwheel but I sure wouldn't want to spend all that money and find out that it isn't for us. Right now we have just a half ton truck and and a 28ft TT or has anyone that has upgraded from a TT regretted going to a larger fifthwheel.

  • I tend to agree with 5'ers not being a good idea with a 1/2 ton. There are smaller lighter weight 5'ers that could work but manufactures aren't making as many of them as they used to. I live in a mountain state and attempting to pull over 6,000lbs up the grades isn't fun. Sure truck can do it but it's just not fun. Been there, done that.

So we upgraded to a diesel 3/4 ton and went from a 6,000lb 23' TT to a 8800lb 30' 5'er. Absolutely love it! So much more outside storage on the 5'er than the TT. No more getting beat up by high winds and trucks. Tows so much easier. The only downfall is backing. A few feet longer than the TT and slower turn response of the 5'er takes some learning.
  • I don't know of any places that rent RV's other than class "C's". My guess is there are additional issues since the renting company has to be concerned about the condition of the TV, its towing capacity and the extra bit of skill required in towing a trailer versus driving a class "C".

My wife and I actually started our RV journey by renting a class "C" to see if the whole RV experience. A year later we purchased our first TT.
  • I've never heard of anyone who rents pickups set up with a hitch and brake controller; much less TV/trailer combo.

I don't know what kind of truck you have (if any. A signature would help formulate replies) but half-tons and fivers really don't play well together. (It is NOT necessary for every person who pulls a fiver with a 1/2 to post a rant!)

It seems to me, and I have not even purchased my 5th wheel yet, that the difference is in the setup. With the Class C, hand the renter the keys and do a 5 minuet drive around the block and he is good to go, (I don't agree with that but that is what they do)! vs installing the 5th wheel hitch, brakes, etc.. just to rent a 5th wheel?

Can't imagine anyone would do this. Too much liability and risk of damage from an inexperienced operator. Maybe you have a friend with one and you could ride along or possibly drive it. I've never regretted going from a TT to a fiver and don't know anyone who has..

We regetted buying a fifth. Have a 2002 GMC 1500 and bought a 24.5 fith. Even with it being a small fifth it was to much to tow with our truck. Went back to a TT.
