Tuff chucking issue

A friend is having an issue with his new truck and camper. The truck and camer are brand new. Sometimes on the level and normally when pull up hill, there's is a jerking.
Tach is steady, service tech found now issue with truck.

It kind of fells like chucking but up a hill?

The trailer is pretty level when hooked to the truck. The truck is a new Chevy 2500 gas. The trailer is a Cougar don't know the size but it's a 10000 lb Rig. Curt hitch.

It feels like the trailer brakes are pulsing on and off lightly. I tried turning off the traction control thinking it might be sensing sway and pumping the brakes. Didn't seem to help.
I watched the hitch while the rig was jerking but couldn't see any re is quite a bit of play when the rig stops and restarts.

I did hook up to this trailer with my 2012 Chevy Duramax and it pulled smoothly.

Any thoughts?

  • Are the rails and mounts torqued down correctly? Spacers installed? You said he had a Kurt hitch; are the little rubber pads installed between the rails & the hitch? I know on mine the pads take up the gap.
  • From the back seat of the truck I couldn't the rails. Maybe I'll mount a camera and film it.
The dealer did replace the head assembly. That was one of the first things they tried. But maybe it' is the whole hitch.
  • its the curt hitch watch the rails closely i saw this when the rails would move so the enitre hitch is chucking not just the head
  • The problem is evident at 35 to about 55 this morning. It it were the trailer wiring I would expect to see the problem appear when I pulled it with my truck over the same route. The owne reports the issue on near level roads. Although I only saw it on up grades this morning.

Did the "chucking" disappear when the speed reached 5-8 MPH? If so, the problem could be launch shudder which is caused by incorrect pinion to driveshaft angle. The pinion angle will change as the truck squats under the pin weight of the trailer - the more it squats, the worse the launch shudder problem will be. This can be minimized by adjusting the pinion angle, but correcting it for loaded conditions can create problems when the truck is unloaded. In other words, wherever it's set is a compromise.

I fixed this issue with our truck by installing Torklift Stableloads.

  • Some kind of short to a hot wire in the trailer brake line?

You might have somebody follow and see if the trailer brake lights are flashing (like driver was "riding the brakes".)

Also (thinking as I type) maybe a short in the breakaway switch that only shows up while going uphill? That seems like a LONG stretch.
