upgrading to 16" wheels

After reading some of the recent LT tire and 16" wheel threads I would like to also upgrade to LTs for various reasons, but will need to upgrade my 15" wheels. My 5er is very short/light, but I want the added piece of mind if the durability LT tires seem to give. Couple of questions:

1) Does Sendel make good wheels? Specifically: these

2) All the LT tires I find in similar size to what I have now are 1" taller. I know that equates to 1/2" height difference. I currently have just shy of 6" between the tires and 4" from the floor of the 5er. Is this enough clearance for the bigger tires? I have Dexter Equa-flex and correct track suspension if that makes a difference.

3) Where do you guys find the best prices, online, in store, etc?

Thanks!
  • I was in the same position as you however I wanted to get additional height so I opted for taller tires, in your case 225/75r16's in LT e rated would be ideal as they offer a little over 200# more capacity per tire compared to the factory setup.

My unit came with Sendel wheels and they look to be of good quality, the specs are good. I'm going with the. Same Sendel wheels that my unit came with but in 16's instead.

With the measurements you posted, I would not shy away from the 1" diameter larger tires, you have plenty of clearance left.
  • You are going to loose 1/2 inch on all sides from the rim, plus the difference in tire sidewall. Plan on about 1 inch per tire. So the 4 above would be 3, the 6 between would be 4. Best upgrade on my TT years ago, I ended up going to 245/75/16 tires, and timed it to take the old tires off the TV and put them on the new rims for the trailer. Total cost was under $400 for the rims, the tire place mounted and balanced for free since I was buying more. I ended up with over 12k of tires on a 9900 TT. I put 22-25k a year on my TV (mostly empty - DD), so the tires have ~10k left on them when I change them, not enough for another winter, but more then enough for the trailer. The trailer ends up with newer tires when the current ones hit ~4 years old.

E-rated 15" LTs are not available. Plenty of D-rated are. Given that my 11,300 GVW FW was placarded for D's, anything significantly lighter shouldn't be an issue. Now, if you're on the edge of a D-rated LT tire for your weight, some tire shops won't install them, so you'd need to take the wheels off yourself and have the new tires mounted and balanced, then reinstall them on your trailer. Posting the placard info would be helpful.

  • unless you just really want to go up to 16s, they make LT's in 15". you can look at tirerack.com, discount tire or several other sites and find several different tires. by your measurements, it looks like you have the room to go larger if you want. I run 16" Goodrich commercial t/a's
