Voltage 3990 Good or Bad?

That was one we considered when looking for our trailer. After some careful consideration and feedback from owners, we kept looking and found our Grand Design 385TH.

We have a 2015 3818 and love it, we spent every weekend in it from April through August this year, we also just came back from a 4500 mile trip to Colorado. I will admit it's not without it's flaws. I have had to replace the water pump, outside trim, backup camera, bedroom slide floor, as well little misc. maint. items. The floor was a manufacturing issue and I did end up getting screwed just outside of our warranty period (more of a dealer issue in my mind). After the slide was fixed I've had no issues. If you are handy and like to mill around I'd say go for it. If you don't enjoy working on little things or aren't handy I'd stay away.

The good: tows like a dream and we like the comforts/features packed into it
The bad: quality is not high on dutchmen's list, like anything else there are good ones and bad ones in the market.

Quality is on par with the rest of the industry, these rigs are mass produced and pumped out quickly. I firmly believe you will have issues with any house you can pull down the road at 70 mph!

When I worked at CW we had Voltage line until July 2015. CW dumped it due to warranty issues and lack of support from Dutchman. We actually had a unit buckle the frame, when inside the whole floor bowed up in the middle. Finger pointing started and never ended.
As ramgunner pointed out there are many toyhaulers out there, keep looking. We have a Jayco Seismic that is 45 ft, you have to be careful of park sites. I have yet had to change sites. Many parks have pictures of the site on line these days, utilize it. we boondock most of the time so parks are really no issue.

We have had a 3950 for 5 years. It has had its share of problems but nothing major. As another has pointed out - typical quality for the industry. I tow mine with a 2011 Chev dually diesel - wouldn't want to try it with a gasser. At that length you will have to plan ahead where you stay.

I wouldn't want a 3990 because of the east / west bed but that's subjective.

You know these things aren't airtight right? I think you'll find it very drafty in the winter in Colorado.

I missed the winter in Colorado part, dual pane windows are a must in the winter. Heated tanks would be great also, an enclosed under belly may or may not be the best for winter use.

We have a 2016 3990. We haven't had any major problems yet. We have only had it since February 2016. It was used when we bought it. I am probably gonna take it in this week for a problem with the fridge and water pump. The length and size can be a issue sometimes. You need to plan your routes accordingly and check Rv parks for site size. The hardest for us has been overnight stays while we are on the road. Since it has a onboard generator we have started to stay at rest areas and similar places when we need to stop for the night. The Chevy dually should pull it fine. We have a 2013 GMC dually and the only problem I have had is it going into limp mode because of a overboost code.

We've looked at and are considering the 3970. I've read extensively on the owner forums over there and it seems they just got done with a fairly major leak issue on their slides which was fixed, I think, on the 2016 models. Most of the other fairly major complaints involve the ducting of the AC and poor taping / construction of the air ducts resulting in poor air flow. In addition most of the unit is made with OSB so if it gets wet, there will be uneven and rapid expansion. So you must be cautious and inspect those seals, slides and roof. Same vein, there isn't a ton of support frame so much of the structure is held via vacuum bonded walls with relatively few studs. Other more minor complaints has to do with wires working loose and them using a **** ton of wire in a rats nest in the belly instead of using some kind of harness for each unit.

Overall for the price they seem like OK units just don't expect it to be trouble free. If you aren't afraid to pick up a screw driver and maybe some youtube videos you can fix a lot without help of the dealer.


We've owned a fair bit of rigs in our time and have found that they ALL have issues. I wasn't impressed with our DRV, I don't think there is an extra 60k in value over say a Grand Design. I think the mid end is a nice market where you get a large, well appointed unit but don't expect it to be trouble free, no RV will be.

We got an amazing deal because it was a 2016 model and our maiden voyage was essentially trouble free (master bath toilet was cross-threaded and leaked but an easy fix). We are super excited and happy with our decision. I believe the Voltage has come a long way over the years as we have been stalking this thing since they came out. Fingers crossed but know they ALL have issues eventually and feel like we have realistic expectations. Happy and safe travels!

Congratulations! I just bought the cheaper Voltage Triton series yesterday myself. I found the quality was better on it than any of the other trailers in this price range. Hope we both have many happy trouble free miles ahead of us. :)
